UX Project: Herschel Music - Case Study

This was a 3rd year project that asked us to re-design a previous app design after identifying some pain points with our original.

Herschel music was created with an audience who travel and enjoy music in mind. The app uses location services to find music in the location you’re in. This allows them to experience the culture through a musical platform, and share it with friends.

THE PROBLEM

The problem identified with the original design of this app was that hierarchy and navigation needed to be improved. The screens were disconnected, and Navigation was not easy, and the search function was hard to get to. This means that users struggled to get through the app.

THE SOLUTION

To resolve these issues of hierarchy and navigation I reorganised the structure of the app in order to make it more functional. As the brand Herschel is associated with travel, this app allows users to find music that is popular in the location they are visiting. This app is also meant to allow users to build their own library of downloads and share music with one another. To highlight the importance of these features, they have been put into a tabbed menu on the bottom, this allows users to easily navigate between the two features. The search feature was put at the top and, visible on any screen allowing users to be able to search for anything at all times.

THE 5 SECOND TEST

As navigation and hierarchy were the areas I wanted to improve with this app, a 5 second test was relevent to understand if at a glance users where able to identify the key features of this app.

I showed the user the screen for 5 Seconds and right after that asked them to dot point all the features they remember seeing on the screen.

ANALYSIS

In reviewing the feedback, I noticed that the order the user had written it in was top down of what is visually on the screen, and the items listed on the menu weren’t taken in straight away, this suggests that an itteration of the design should take place where the tab menu could be at the top.
